Universal Medical Mission (UMM) is dedicated to providing healthcare to domestic and global communities. Past initiatives supported programs in Kingstown, St. Vincent. In August 2018, nearly 30 UMM healthcare professionals traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to mobilize healthcare resources throughout rural areas like Owia, Sandy Bay, Georgetown, and Chateaubelair.
On Friday, April 9, 2021, a volcano known as La Soufriere sent two explosive plumes of ash and smoke into the area. Although there are no immediate reports of casualties or severe injuries, an immediate call for evacuation for nearly 6% of the total population (20,000) was put in order. The residue of the explosion from the volcano contaminated the natural water and nearby agriculture, consequently reducing the food and fresh water supply for all St. Vincentians.
This volcanic eruption, along with COVID-19, poses a major threat to increasing the risk of spreading the virus with a limited amount of supplies. The evacuation order during the pandemic brings complicated immunity challenges to the people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The shortage of PPE, test kits, and vaccinations to protect all residents living on the island, from those who are at risk to individuals who are living with respiratory and predisposed health conditions, places people in imminent danger.
Now more than ever before we ask for support to provide essential resources, food, and PPE to the people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. We encourage you to take action.
